Originally known as Collegium Carolinum, it was established in 1745 as a mid-way institution between high school and university, teaching technical and mathematical subjects as well as fine arts and humanities. After various name changes, namely to the Polytechnic School in 1862, then to the Herzogliche Technische Hochschule Carolo-Wilhelmina (TH) in 1878, the university settled on its current name in 1968.
TU Braunschweig is both one of the oldest and largest technical institutes in Germany, and it belongs to the TU9 Association of the largest and most renowned German technical institutes. Within the institute there are six faculties: the Carl Friedrich Faculty, which is divided into the mathematics, computer science, and business administration and economics departments; life sciences; mechanical engineering; architecture, civil engineering and environmental sciences; humanities and educational sciences; and electrical engineering, information technology and physics.
